Since the dawn of the original Golf GTI, there has been no better way to make a small, practical, fast car than a Hot Hatch.
With everyday convenience alongside sports car performance, it’s small wonder why cars like the MGB and the Triumph Spitfire, stopped production.
These days however, you could argue that this simple recipe has gone slightly haywire. And the car that’s mostly lost in all these new trends, is the outgoing Honda Civic Type-R. Allow me to explain why it’s rubbish-
1. It Looks Too Wild
Now let’s be fair, everyone loves a bit of mad styling at some point. The wing on a Plymouth Superbird for example, is stupidly awesome! And you could say the same about the body of an old Sierra Cosworth.
With the Type-R however, it seems that the designers took this idea of mental-ism, and went completely overboard with it. I mean, 4 exhaust pipes for a 2.0 litre 4 pot! Really Honda?
Also, does this car really need that Formula One style diffuser? Or even those fake air vents on the side?
I won’t say it looks like a ricer’s car, because that’d be ridiculous. But it would perhaps suit a wider range of tastes, if it was a bit less…..showy.
A Golf GTI Clubsport looks about right, it’s noticeably different to a diesel, but it’s quite subtle compare to the Japanese car!
2. It Doesn’t Quite Match Up To It’s Rivals
Obviously, there’s a difference in terms of specs with all car rivalries. But between one of the most highly respected Fast Hatches in the world! (The Focus RS) and the Type-R, the differences are just too wide.
Firstly, there’s a WHOLE second difference in the 0-60 times! Focus RS: 4.7 seconds. Type-R: 5.7 seconds. (both times according to forum sources)
And it’s down on power, compared to the Focus RS as well! And despite producing as much as a Golf R at 306bhp, it’s slower to 60 than the German as well!
If you pitted a drag race between the Type-R and the similarly priced Focus RS. Then the Honda would lose…quite badly. Rubbish feeling to lose, isn’t it?
3. It’s Class Is Confusing
Let’s get something clear. Ford makes 2 hot Focuses, which are both in different classes of fast hatchbacks. The ST is the Hot Hatch, whereas the RS is the full fat, 50 cal Hyper Hatch!
Same story with the Golf too. Which makes the GTI salad, and then the hot Vindaloo R.
The Type-R on the other hand, is debatable. I just can’t work out which class it sits in! Which begs the solution-
If this was a Hot Hatch, then it would be the best car in it’s class, no doubt! Whereas if it was a Hyper Hatch, then it would quite arguably be a bit wet.
The price, the power, the fact it’s FWD makes the whole class thing extremely confusing!
4. It’s Just a Tad Old Fashioned
Newer Hyper Hatches these days are festooned with clever 4WD systems and massive power outputs. You get the sense, that the world is really moving on when you think of cars like the Focus RS.
The Type-R on the other hand, with FWD and a lower power output. Just seems a bit left back in time, compared to it’s rivals.
Don’t get me wrong, the Civic is a fantastic example of what we’ve been using for the past 30 years. But it’s rubbish for a innovating brand like Honda, to not move with the times with fast hatchbacks.
Then again, this point may be pointless if it’s just a Hot Hatch…
And that’s 4 reasons why the FK2 Honda Civic Type-R is rubbish! Don’t you agree? Comment below and let us know.
