The entry level Jaguar XE has been on sale for little while now, and perhaps apart from some aspects of reliability, it’s proven to be a very good car.
Pointless to have the diesel now, but the 335bhp 3.0 litre V6 version was a fine sports saloon. Even without a limited slip diff, it was a modern successor to the achingly pretty MK2 3.4 of the 1960s.
Now however, the engineers at SVO have got into playing with the XE. And according to Auto Express magazine, a beast has been spotted at the Nurburgring earlier this week, looked to be a shouty M3 killer! The XE SVR!
What’s To Be Expected?
The Jaguar XE SVR is expected to use their much loved 5.0 litre supercharged V8. Which in the bonkers F-Type SVR, churns out 567bhp and 700 N.m of torque.
Expect the XE brother to be toned down in power slightly to around the 510 mark. Nevertheless, this car is capable of demonising the BMW M3 until blood pours from it’s eyes!
Expect an AWD system to be fitted to this car as well, as this will handle the insane power delivery over the short wheelbase. A rear drive setup could be possible, but you’ll need the skills of a bat to handle it.
Jaguar XE SVR? Sounds more like the Jaguar ‘I will make the Germans cry on the floor like poufs!’
What About The Other Important Things?
The Jaguar XE SVR is shaping up to look like a modern, carbon brake successor to the revolutionary MK2 3.8! That was Jaguar’s smallest saloon car with a 220bhp straight six from the glorious E-Type!
But that car wasn’t only fabulous because of it’s incredible performance, but because of the way it handled! That’s why so many criminals at the time used them as getaway cars.
And so for the XE SVR to keep hold of that, the engineers are allegedly experimenting with carbon ceramic brakes to make it stop as well as it goes.
There’s also bound to be fine chassis and suspension tweaks alongside a limited slip diff. And some body changes as well. So this car will handle well, when there’s the need to tackle corners in a Bruce Reynolds style bank robbery.
If this all goes to plan, then there’s a reason why not to go German. Even the Italians with the Alfa Gulia QV need to keep an eye out for the brutal Brit!
Speaking Of Competition
Since the Jaguar XE has been in production, the Germans, the Italians and even the Americans have contributed their idea of a small sports saloon car.
It’s naturally called the M3 class, and since 1986, the Bavarian has been boundless. And the Mercedes C63 (the one with the 6.2 litre V8) has proved to be fantastically insane! And even the new one (biturbo 4.0 litre) is a great competitor.
Then Cadillac introduced their rather sharp ATS-V a while back, and built by the same engineers who work on the Chevrolet Corvette, that car is the definitive American M3!
Then we have Alfa Romeo, who hasn’t really built an M3 rival since the 75 QV from the late 1980s. But then shocked the world with the desperately pretty Gulia QV! With a twin turbo Ferrari V6 and fabulous dynamics, that’s the new king of the M3 class!
Audi are even cooking up a new RS4. I’ve tested the old one with the V8. Loved it!
The Jaguar XE SVR is surely capable of being even more fabulous than all these cars. I mean, it’s 2017, and Jaguar are implanting a 5.0 litre supercharged V8 into their smallest saloon! That’s old school hot rod stuff!
So What Do You Think?
Is the Jaguar XE SVR going to be better than it’s German, American and Italian rivals? Or does the M3’s faultless history win you over?
Expect this car to be fully revealed at upcoming motor shows or even the 2017 Goodwood Festival Of Speed!
