Carbon Fiber McLaren XP1 LM drives to the Nurburgring, sets the fastest ever recorded lap, then drives home for tea.
Eat shit Ferrari.
After the best part of four years of scrutiny from the likes of Porsché and especially (like always) Ferrari, McLaren’s flagship hyper car has just recently set the fastest ever lap record on what is regarded by many as the greatest racetrack on the planet; the Nurburgring.
With a time of 06:43:22s.
Impressive for something with number plates and indicators.
Before I get too carried away with this, I should just put a couple of things into context. The Ferrari LaFerrari FXX K, which is what is most likely going to be compared to the XP1 LM, has NOT been around the Nurburgring……yet.
And before I start bragging about how this is indeed faster than the Porsché 918 Spyder (which pulled a 06:57:00 out the bag). The XP1 LM is not the car that was originally pitted up against the likes of Ferrari and Porsché when the three company’s released their flagship cars.
So for me, even though I do very much admire McLaren for doing this, the end result does feel a little bit hollow knowing full well that the LaFerrari FXX K could quite possibly abolish this time.
The driver was a man who I’m sure you’re familiar with, Kenny Brack. He smashed the record at the Goodwood hillclimb last year in 2016 by over 3 seconds in an identical P1 LM.
Of course, the car is fully road-legal. I mean, I know how, but I still kind of don’t. Especially when it has enough aero to drive upside down and an engine rated at over 1000hp.
The engine itself is a slightly revised version of the standard P1’s flat plane crank twin-turbo V8. However the engine in the LM is a 4.0 litre block whereas the one in the standard car is just 3.8 litres.
It’s tough world we live in.
As mentioned above, the LM has got much more aero than the standard car. Along with various little bits of weight saving thanks to plastic windows, lighter seats, nuts and bolts.
That comes as no real surprise. I mean it’s fairly common for standard road supercars to get the lightweight treatment in an attempt at breaking records. But there are very few which then allow you to carry on home and do the daily grind.
